This is a great book. A woman explorer in 1903. One who writes well. A good (true) story, with a race down the river, an appreciation of her guides not usual in 1903, and love of the country. "What do flies matter when you are free?" Essential reading for any canoeist. The book has been rediscovered-- just look at the number of reprints available (great story, public domain).
So read it! But get some other edition. What's that horsewoman doing on the cover? Mrs. Hubbard was in a canoe, and a horse could not get anywhere in Labrador terrain. There weren't any buildings either. Just the bush. Publisher/artist clearly didn't know a thing about the book. The cover looks like a fit for some dreadful fantasy/romance/fairy tale.
Also read Davidson and Rugge's Great Heart-- which fills out the story from Mina's diaries, her guide's....
not my kind of book. it took too long to get started. maybe later. i h ve nothing more to say.
I was hoping to see some pictures not seen in other books (such as Great Heart The History of a Labrador Adventure; Lure of the Labrador Wild) of Labrador expeditions, but I was disappointed - there isn't any picture in this book. The publisher just did not include any pictures that Mrs. Mina Benson Hubbard had taken in her expedition. Besides, the print is very small.
the book was very informative for anyone desiring to know more about the history and geography of the region, however, it did tend to get a bit tedious and bogged down at times.
