Too Good to Be True Mostly Miserable Life of April Sinclair Laurie B Friedman Books

April Sinclair was definitely not going to be the only girl Faraway, Alabama with an upside down smiley face this year. Well, maybe not until things started into a downward spiral. The was that little `incident' at the Crawfish Cafe when Dad decided to be a "human shovel" and ended up in the Crawladies restroom instead of the Crawladies. Pee-yew! Unfortunately April and her BFF (since kindergarten), Brynn, walked in and heard things. How embarrassing, but her grandmother was setting the scene for a positive year with her "Happiness Movement." Now Gaga could be pretty embarrassing, but April was going into the eighth grade with a smile on her face. That was until everything started to go south on her.

Faraday High School was going to have tryouts for a few younger team members. Four to be exact and April and Brynn were going to try out for the team. It was going to be an awesome year if they were dancing together. April was back with Billy, and with a boyfriend, a best friend, and a place on the team she'd be having her own happiness movement. Practice was on and Billy was going to be the judge. "You know," Brynn exclaimed, " I don't mean this in a mean way, but you do kind of look like a duck when you dance." South, going south. And then there was Matt Parker. April always managed to be a "mental case" around him.

Even April's little sisters, May and June, thought she danced like a duck. Not. Ms. Baumann didn't think so and when the list came out April was on it! It was happy dance time, but there was one little problem ... Brynn wasn't on the list. The older girls on the team were really mad, but no problem. The work began and things began to look up, or so she thought. "April, you're my new best friend," exclaimed Emily. Something wasn't quite right about that and then there was the Matt problem. The little embarrassing incident in the Crawladies restroom began to look like child's play when Chloe, Brynn, Billy and the e-n-t-i-r-e dance team found out what she'd done!

This is yet another humorous tale with April Sinclair when her entire life does a hip-hop flop. Of course none of this mess is at all funny to April, but young readers can definitely see it coming. When April makes mistakes, she does them in a big way. For me, it was a you've-definitely-done-it-this-time moment when I read about what April had done. When you are in the eighth grade and are a "thirteen-year-almost-four-month" old gal what can you expect when you tell someone your secret? Not much and that's when the tale began to pick up and go south rapidly. It's the type of story that `tweens, teens, and reluctant readers will gravitate toward. Why? Because everyone just might see a little of themselves in April Sinclair, a gal who sometimes makes her own life miserable.
