A HISTORICAL CHRISTMAS PRESENT is a collection of three romance novellas that were all previously published and have been reissued for this 2008 holiday anthology...I WILL by Lisa Kleypas - 5 STARS
Originally appeared in the "Wish List" anthology in 2001
Book 2.5 in the "Capitol Theatre" Series
When a Georgian bluestocking is propositioned by a rakish noble, she finds the unlikely deal he proposes is the gift of a lifetime... I adored this little story when I first read it a decade ago, and I still do today. It's such a touching, memorable, and utterly beautiful romance. A definite must read for those who loved the "Capitol Theatre" series featuring Logan Scott. the entire novella engaged my emotions and moved me throughout. Caroline and Andrew were total opposites, but completely perfect together. They get to know each other over several months time, so the developing love between them was entirely believable. Ultimately their union is a matter of acceptance and redemption, and without a doubt Caroline proves to be Andrew's saving grace. It's truly a captivating read and one of absolute best romantic short stories I've ever read, and likely ever will!
THREE FRENCH HENS by Lynsay Sands - 4 STARS
Originally appeared in the "Five Gold Rings" anthology in 1999
A twelfth-century scullion maid gets the chance to play a lady's maid - and win the true love of an impoverished lord... I always enjoy Ms. Sands stories and her typical humor is evident here, but not so much as in her longer novels. I liked Brinna and Royce who were both good-hearted and gentle souls. The plot was interesting and the twist at the end was something I didn't see coming, although maybe I should have. And while this couple gets their happy ending, that's not before a heartbreaking revelation. Overall I thought it was a good, quick read and that the love scene was very passionate, but I didn't feel a deep connection between these two like I always hope for. It was still an entertaining romance, it just fell a bit short on the true love theme for me. Anything this author writes is worth the time it takes to read though, and it was a fun little story in the end.
FATHER CHRISTMAS by Leigh Greenwood - 3 STARS
Originally appeared in the "Their First Noel" anthology in 1995
Delivering a young widow's baby during the holiday season transforms the heart of a lonely drifter in the nineteenth-century Arizona Territory... Prior to this I'd only read one other book by Ms. Greenwood called "Rose" which I enjoyed. And while this one was sweet and charming, it was a little slow and not very believable either. The entire story takes place in a handful of days, but after just one day of knowing each other they were already admitting their love. And while the words were spoken and the connection implied, I simply didn't feel any sparks between this couple. Joe and Mary were both really nice people, and though Joe appears somewhat gruff, he was a truly kind man. Because Mary was pregnant this was not a passionate read and contained only a couple of chaste kisses. Although not too exciting, it was still a touching tale of what Christmas is all about.

A Historical Christmas Present Lisa Kleypas Lynsay Sands Leigh Greenwood 9780505527882 Books Reviews
Usually I do not bother to review anthologies. Takes to long and they are not usually worth writing about....This one being the exception to that rule.
For the price tag and quality of stories...you can't go wrong with this one.
It's tough, but Lisa Kleypas's RITA award winner "I Will" was my favorite. For those that read her pair of books Somewhere I'll Find You and Because You're Mine, you'll recognize the hero. He is Logan Scott's renegade half brother, Andrew, Lord Drake. This is a reformed rake story...my favorite. It has one of the most fun, interesting, imaginative, and sexy love scenes I've ever read...in a short story no less! I loved the heroine Caroline and how she goes about getting her man! I found myself reading portions of this story over and over. Andrew's reformation is sweet, convincing, and heartwarming.
Lynsay Sands, "Three French Horns" was the weakest of the bunch. It's kind of a Cinderella story with a twist ending. I appreciate Sand's humor, but often times her novels lack the depth of feeling that others do. However, only when reading Lynsay Sands have I ever laughed out loud uncontrollably! In this one, Royce, Lord Thurleah is never really developed enough for me to connect with him. Okay book....just not memorable like the other two are.
Leigh Greenwood delivers a special treat with "Father Christmas". If you like this one you have to read "Outsider" by Penelope Williamson. It has the same premise. A drifter comes into the life of a widow and her child and none are ever the same. Although Joe is definitely a bit rough around the edges, the way that he cares for Mary and Sarah had me choked up a few times. This story, out of all of them, seems to best capture the "feeling" of Christmas. A beautiful story of the making of a family.
Buy this book. It's a steal for the price!
This was a fun read to put you in the mood for the upcoming holiday. The first book begs the reader to answer the question of rather a 26 year old spinster to win the heart of a well known rogue. Lord Drake is all that is improper but in this read he has to appear the opposite in order to gain his inheritance. No better way to convince his father than asking Caroline Hargreaves with her sparkling reputation to bring home his sham. -Lisa Kleypas, "I will"
The second is by Lynsay sands and while I've loved books by her in the past. I really missed her humor she usually injects in her story. This is a nice story about a a scullery maid posing above her station. Brinna does it to give an easier life for Aggie but of course Royce steals her heart. He is a good man trying to better his peoples situation. The ending was a happy one but over the top mushy. I know that sounds bad but it wrapped up to fast even when the deception gets revealed at the end. - "Three French Hens"
the last book was the only clean story out of the three and so sweet. I never read a book from Leigh Greenwood but I enjoyed this one. When I think of the holidays children always come to mind. This a story of a pregnant widow and her step daughter. Her late husbands partner is on the run but falsely accused. While looking for a buried treasure on the ranch he manages to win the heart of the ladies and the animals on the ranch. Its just a heart warming, feel good story for the season. "Father Christmas" delivers Joe into Mary and young Sarah's life and it still leaves its effects in my heart. I'm a sucker when it comes to kids but one that has lost both of her parents but is now loved by two people not related to her by blood is so endearing to me. Enjoy your season!
