Beauty From Pain Beauty Series Volume 1 Georgia Cates 9781482348736 Books

When I started the book this morning I hesitated about continuing. The initial character introduction, in fact the whole premise of the book, kind of squicked me out. The hero's search for "the one" - the next woman he would have a completely anonymous relationship with - was described in a way that felt stalkerish. The heroine's decision to agree, even to get in a private car or go to a private home alone with someone who refused to even tell her his name sent up red flags that I had trouble ignoring. I pushed on, telling myself if give it a few chapters. Now I wish I hadn't continued.
I actually began to care about the characters and while there were a few of the usual "anyone can write a novel" spelling and grammatical errors, I enjoyed the story enough to overlook them. By the end I was emotionally invested in the outcome of the relationship. And then the author delivered a big F you to her readers. The book ended in a cliffhanger of epic proportions. Maybe there will be a happily ever after, but not until readers shell out for two more books. This one ended with the couple separating. Spoiler? Yeah, that's the point. I wish I'd been warned that this book was not a stand alone novel. I refuse to be manipulated into buying a second book.

Beauty From Pain Beauty Series Volume 1 Georgia Cates 9781482348736 Books Reviews

3 stars -- This one's going to be hard to review. I wasn't particularly sucked into this one, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to pinpoint why. I guess I just wasn't that enamoured with the characters to start. Laurelyn had some funny moments, I enjoyed her playfulness. But I just didn't feel much depth to either her or Jack. There was a backstory to Laurelyn, and I felt a bit for her past and the way she grew up, but I guess I wanted more... And we didn't really get to explore Jack's past at all -- I mean, mostly just why does he feel the way he does about relationships? It just felt a little glossed over.

Didn't care for the secondary characters at all. Which is not a necessity, but it's nice to have a supporting cast. But this book was really the Jack and Laurelyn show. Maybe it's that I didn't buy into the arrangement and why she would accept it in the first place. Particularly b/c we're told that she's not sure she can do a casual affair, but it seems like she fell into this one pretty fast.

I wasn't even all that engaged in the sex scenes. Again, not sure why -- they were just lacking that extra magic and chemistry for me.

I guess all in all I was a bit bored. I had noticed this was a series, and so I can't say I was too surprised with the cliffhanger...I practically saw it coming from the beginning of the story. I'm mildly curious about how this romance will play out, b/c it was getting a bit better towards the end, but definitely not curious enough for the price of the next book. (not that I'm saying it should be cheaper, just my own personal threshold of interest -- if it had been cheaper, I might have said screw it and continued on, but now I don't feel too bad about quitting after this one)

Basically there wasn't a lot I could point out as bad about the book, but I just didn't personally connect with it.
So I'll be brutally honest... I went into this book thinking I'd get a quick read before I consumed myself with another hot new series on my to read list. What I wasn't expecting was to get one of the best stories I've ever read. I completely fell in love with Jack and Laurelyn. Beautiful, well rounded, emotionally relatable characters.
Laurelyn was by far one of the most genuine, sophisticated female heroine's I've ever encountered. She was truly beautiful. Her personality was perfect. Never needy or unrealistic with her expectations from Jack. It was very pleasing and relieving. And Jack. Oh goodness, this man would make any woman weak in the knees. The perfect gentleman, but still totally alpha male.
The author did an amazing job with the flow of the story. It was so smooth and all consuming. I could not put this book down. And not to be a spoiler, but damn this book pulled at my emotions, in all the right ways. I laughed, I cried, and I totally swooned. Georgia Cates is unbelievably talented. I promise you, you will not regret this read. By far, above and beyond my expectations. The only regret I have is not reading it sooner.
Well played Mrs. Georgia Cates!! Well played!!
Rip off cliffhanger. Need I say more? Don't waste your time. If you are going to write a book, write the whole thing instead of chopping it into pieces to get money. If we LIKE you as an author, we will pay for quality writing.
