An oldie but goody from John Pike, a renaissance man for sure...I acquired this second-hand, and like it but would wish for more color illustrations.

For anyone seriously interested in learning about or painting with transparent watercolor this is a book that should be in your reference library.

John Pike was an absolute master of the medium. He goes into great detail about materials and basic principles of watercolor. He discusses tools and techniques. There is a priceless section on pigments and the way they react to paper and in a painting. Values are discussed illustrating their importance in planning. Design principles are covered. Step by step demonstrations are provided that make the process easier to understand.

No matter what direction your creativity takes you, I feel it is vital to have a solid foundation in the basics, and John Pike does that. Once you understand the limitations and endless capabilities of transparent watercolor as presented by Pike you will be able to experiment wisely in your own way. From these basic principles you are free to explore other ways to introduce pigment to paper. It makes no difference if your interests are representational works or abstract. You still must understand the basics!

Many of the fine illustrations at the beginning of this Dover publication are black and white to demonstrate techniques. That is followed with full color examples that can be intimidating for beginners. Don't be! Just remember, we are all different. We see and create differently...different, not wrong!

Pick up a brush, dip it into water and pigment then put it on paper, but do it your own way. Experiment. Have fun. Be patient with yourself and you will learn to love watercolor.

I am happy to have added this book to my collection of art books. I really like the way the author writes, the book is very readable. Although the book was written some time ago, I found the information completely pertinent for today. There is a mixture of color and black and white plates in the book, I find this adds to the character of the book. There is loads of valuable information for the new, or experienced watercolor painter.
This book by John Pike is an enjoyable journey through his work, materials and methods. Pike describes his approach in individual paintings while providing helpful tips regarding how to proceed while avoiding pitfalls in watercolor.

He discusses transparency, opaques, his palette, how to build your own palette, wash techniques and much more.
