What a delightful read! The author was able to accurately describe how we look at our past and future with rose colored glasses. Many of us remember holidays as being warm, friendly,carefree and happy. That wasn't necessarily so. But we want to believe it and we want to recreate it but we can't because it never was like we imagine or imagined. Through humor the author took us through a difficult and challenging year as Brent and Josh tried to enjoy being farmers. The descriptions of Sharon Springs were accurate.

I looked up Beekman 1802 on the internet and was so glad to see that it has survived and is thriving. Check it out!!

The book is well worth reading- it will be a suggestion for our reading group

This book caught my eye when the guys on the cover looked familiar. They looked even more familiar when I read in the blurb that they have a goat farm. I recognized them from the most recent series of The Amazing Race, where I rooted for them to win, so of course I had to get the book!

I found the book fun and inspiring. I had to go online to figure out which guy was Josh and which was Brent, because I couldn't identify them by the information in the book, since I didn't know one was an ad exec and one an MD. But I got my thoughts straight and enjoyed the book all the more, since I sort of knew them from the TV show.

I was completely involved with the story, envious that they could get the farm, lovely goats, grow their own veggies, and when I thought they might lose the farm and have to give up on such a beautiful dream, I was anxious.

These are two gentlemen you can really care about - I do, and I will anxiously await the next part of their story.

Since I have noted myself in an earlier book review as a grammar-a-holic, I did find several errors, but nothing to spoil my read. Read it, you won't regret it!
I got the paperback version to read out loud on a road trip so it was like Audible for half the price but a sore throat after. The book was a wonderful read and explained a lot about who we saw on the Fabulous Beekman Boys show. The state of their relationship seemed to be quite fragile during that time and now it's easier to understand why. I don't know how they survived such grueling schedules but they came through it. I especially loved the comparison between their Oprah and Martha personalities. While I loved the little catch up blurbs written a few years after the book, I'd really love a follow up documenting the Amazing Race time to now. I did learn I could never be an audiobook narrator as I bawled like an idiot at a few parts.
The Bucolic Plague is everything you expect it to be snarky humor, warm sentiment, pastoral imagery, and a riches to rags to reality story that keeps the reader reaching for another cup of coffee and a comfortable chair. As a "gentleman" farmer in the making myself, I found this book to be a delightful read. While the author's experiences are certainly different than my own, there is a bit of myself that I can find in his discovery of what actual farming entails. But surprising to me is that there are moments in this book filled with genuinely outstanding writing. Josh Kilmer-Purcell is not only witty and cheeky, but he is an artful writer. In Chapter Thirty-Four, Josh recounts a visit from the New York Times in which the interviewer wants to know why the couple purchased the Beekman. Josh's narrative about what the "true" story really is, and what, in fact, truth is, ranks as some of the best writing a reader can hope to find in modern non-fiction. It is these little nuggets mixed in with all the other wonderful qualities of this book that combine together to make a book worthy of 5-stars.
Another book...another place in time that Josh takes you with him. However, I almost didn't get through the first chapter for uncontrollable fits of (horrible sounding) snorting, crying, and tissue-grabbing laughter. Oh, but hold on to the tissues because you'll need them again...and sometimes not for laughing. There are moments of heartbreaking anguish in this "happier" book that, for us Beekman Boys fans (who think we know them so well from their show as well as The Amazing Race), that it kinda stuns you. Well...I was stunned, anyway. But, like his previous memoir, I couldn't put this one down, either. And I don't think you will. Laugh with them, cry for them, cheer them on, pray for them, walk with them...through Spring flowers and barn muck...just don't give up on them, for they have that "I will survive"-winning spirit that carries THEM through whatever life brings on, and it has a way of rubbing off on YOU, the reader! To quote them, "Good job!"
This book is funny and delightful and delightfully funny!! By chapter 4 my face hurt from smiling so much. I had to put it down. At 50% through I was pleasantly surprised I was only halfway finished. At 86% I was shocked. When I heard about the authors memoir I immediately bought it. And also his non-fiction book. I have already convinced 2 other people to purchased this amazing book. I was a little hesitant to spend $12.99 on a kindle, however I was enjoying the first few chapters SO much I didn't care. And I read a couple reviews on his last book. Sent me over the edge. In a wonderful way. The authors sense of humor is a lot like mine. Dry. And I love him. I love all of them. And I hope you do too. I even loved the flies. And Bubby. And...I had to come back and add a beautiful addendum. The very last line of the book made be bawl. Beautifully.
