After reading Hera I knew I had to get into Rex Rising immediately. I loved Chrystalla Thoma's imagination and constant action and had to know what happened next. I was not disappointed and found myself stealing moments to finish Rex Rising. It was exciting from the first page and the idea of parasites fighting within the body was fascinating.

16 year old Elei had been shot and was fleeing to what he hoped, was safety. His boss and mother figure Pelia, has been assassinated in his arms and he too, had been shot. Before dying, Pelia gave him the address of Kalaes where Elei collapses 24 hours later. Kalaes and his girlfriend Maera nurse him back to health than end up escaping with him when the Gultur come hunting him. Hera, a Gultur that is empathetic to the humans and wants to see change, helps them escape the Gultur several times because their location keeps becoming compromised. The Gultur are the oppressing dictatorial government of the land who are all women and consider themselves to be goddesses.

This story looks like it is marketed for the YA demographic so I must warn those that care, that this story has profanity ( hells gd sht p-off) and a sexual encounter including the description of female body parts and female nudity. I, personally, would recommend it to an adult audience.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series called Rex Cresting!

Rex Rising is the story of Elei, a young man tormented by the parasites inside him. Elei, a sympathetic character if one has ever been written, arrives on the scene after fleeing the murder of his employer and mentor. He has one thought as he loses time and blood get to Aerica, the last thing his mentor was able to tell him. Once on Aerica he finds Kaelas and Maera a young couple who take him in and patch him up. Little does the group know the Gultar, the violent female rulers, are after him. They will stop at nothing to get the secret Elei carries inside.

The fantastic world that Thoma creates in the Elei Chronicles will not leave fantasy readers disappointed. The seven islands are home to a race of infected humans. The parasites that inhabit the humans change and enhance their bodies, but can also kill them. I found myself fascinated by the seemingly indepth research that went into creating these complex parasites and their effects. Don't get me wrong, this book is not a boring analysis on parasitic life. The story is jam-packed with action from beginning to end. Teens will turning pages to the end.

Rex is a thoroughly enjoyable read. The characters are well-built and realistic; the world is creative and unique without being too foreign to leave us lost. Thoma's pacing and structure kept tension on every page. The cover itself is stunning and I was pleased to note that Thoma designed it herself. My one critique would be I longed for a broader look at the life and culture of this new planet. Since Elei spent most of his time on the run or in hiding, we missed out on the broad landscape that might have really enriched this world for me. One can only hope that we see more of that in the sequel, Rex Cresting, now available on .

My recommendation is this book will please anyone who likes a good adventure into a new world. It is well worth the $2.99 price tag and while you're at it you can pick up the sequel as well.

If the cover and title don't grab a reader's attention, the opening line to "Rex Rising" certainly should "Blood seeped between Elei's fingers." With that line, author Chrystalla Thoma pulls the reader into her wonderfully crafted world. The novel's premise that parasites infecting humans can create new human races is one I've not seen before, and that adds to the draw of the story. Mix it with a group of well-crafted, interesting young characters and you have a winner of a tale. These are endearing characters that you want to be with. At no point did I want to put this novel down. Chrystalla Thoma delivered right to the end.

Although billed as a YA sci-fi novel, the characters are on the high side of YA, and the sci-fi elements are light enough that even non-sci-fi readers can appreciate and enjoy it. But I also encountered a nice and unexpected surprise while reading this. Though self-published, this novel and the writing are exceptionally clean, cleaner than many traditionally published ones. I counted only ONE typo (minor at that) in the entire book!

A glossary of terms she uses would have been helpful at times, although not absolutely necessary. Rather than attempt to explain them to the reader (in what could have been an unnatural way since the characters would already know what they meant), the author chose to keep the novel genuine. As a result, I felt as if I'd been dropped into her world and left to figure out some things for myself. It's good when a reader doesn't feel condescended to.

After you read this novel, you'll definitely want to read the second novel in the series (Rex Cresting) as well as her other works. Chrystalla Thoma is definitely an author to watch, and I'm going to be sure that I read everything she writes.
Elei is a sixteen to seventeen year old orphan who was discovered in a trash dump as a baby. Saved by a benevolent trash picker who uses one parasite to combat the others that are trying to ravage his body he ends up the chauffeur of another woman who treats him as her son until she is killed. An adventure of harrowing twists begins as Elei tries to fulfill the wishes of his dead benefactor, find the revolutionaries known as the Undercurrent and help bring change to a world of oppression and gendercide.
This is the first of a series that is more than a trilogy in YA to adult science fiction and it is very addicting. I enjoyed it and recommend it.
