DNF at 25%.I had heard such great things about Penny Reid's books. The premise of this book seemed so great, light, funny and beards and all! So it was like a slap in the face to realize that Truth or Beard is yet another romance book where sexual assault and slutshaming is romanticized.
Jessica is ridiculously naive and juvenile in her actions and thoughts. It was Duane however whom I hated. He pretends to be his brother Beau, engages in a sexual situation with Jess and when the thing blows up in his face, what does he do? He basically blames Jess about the whole thing, physically holds her down and tells her to calm down, when Jess is rightfully pissed. Because apparently it's still the woman's role in situations like this to calmly take part in a reasonable conversation about what just happened and take part of the blame. I was just so incensed about this whole thing.
Duane proceeds to slutshame his ex-girlfriend later on and putting Jess on a pedestral. He can't have sex with Jess, because this is a girl he's about to marry. WHAT? There's a skinny dipping scene where they are both naked and Duane warms Jess up by hugging her without asking for a permission in a situation where Jess is obviously mad at him. Eww.
For some reason it was the emergence of some ridiculous biker sideplot that made me drop the book, I just couldn't anymore. I hear there's skinheads later on, isn't that just peachy.
So I hated the book, just HATED it. Authors just shouldn't write this kind of cr*p in this day and age.

Truth or Beard Winston Brothers Book 1 edition by Penny Reid Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I didn't want this book to end. Isn't that endorsement enough for you? Ha! While reading Truth or Beard, my husband thought I was crazy, due to all of the "laughing out loud" I was doing. I also read out loud to him several times- I could not help myself! The Winston men are completely addictive, every single one of them.
Now that Jessica is back in town, Duane decides that he is going to make his move on her. Jessica has had a massive crush on his twin brother, Beau for YEARS. Beau is the sweet one, while Duane has always been the one to drive her nuts by teasing her and giving her a hard time. In fact, Jessica has always believed that Duane just plain ole didn't like her. Well, you know what they say about the little boy that was constantly teasing you on the playground?
Yep, he's got a crush on you. Once he decides that he and Jessica need to be together, he vows to make it happen honorably and properly. Unfortunately, Jessica cannot keep her hands to herself and she makes it very hard for Duane to take things slowly. Ms. Reid throws in a little bit of suspense plot involving a local MC that several characters have ties to. I thought this was a great addition to the overall plot because it shed some light on the depth of several characters like Claire (I cannot wait for her book).
I loved the longtime connection that Jessica and Duane have with each other. Even though they've given each other a hard time all of their lives, they have incredible chemistry that screams relationship. Is the path to a relationship like this one ever smooth? Not so much. Duane knows that Jessica wants to travel and he is firmly entrenched in Green Valley with no intention of ever leaving. He has family and a business and a little bit of trouble that pops up (see MC plot) that he feels ties him to home. Of course, he does not want to hold her back in any way because he truly does care for her deeply. I have to say that Duane is completely swoon-worthy.
I'm a little bit of a newcomer to Ms. Reid's books but every one I read, I fall deeper in love with her writing. I absolutely cannot wait for more from this series! As if I couldn't have fallen more in love with the whole family, Cletus was one of the most entertaining characters ever written. Ever.
If you love a book with romance and humor with a nice bit of sexytimes thrown in, you'll LOVE Truth or Beard!
Not a fan of big misunderstandings or boys being forgiven for being awful. I couldn’t find Daunte appealing at all.
I could get past the quirky but enjoyable writing style, but didn't make it through the first chapter. Maybe fans of this author would expect the language and explicit sex scene, although I was suprised there was no mention of this easily found in reviews. Wish I had known before downloading!
Oh. My. Gawd. This story is hot in the beginning. In Chapter 1 Duane says “Jessica James, you’ve been giving me hot looks that are difficult to ignore.” Duane’s honesty is extremely refreshing all through the book, and his devotion to Jessica is beautiful. The friction and tension sizzles between these two. Wow.
However, my attention was only captured until about chapter 7 (there’s 29 altogether) and then I completely lost interest and moved onto another book. I did come back to this and finished it in dribs and drabs (because I PAID for it, dang-it!), but it took me 18 days. In the meantime I read other books that held my attention where this couldn’t. Upon reflection, the reason is because too much sexy stuff happens in the beginning of the book, and then the reader is subjected to hot and cold treatment. That is, hot = romance travelling nicely with sexual tension; and cold = the protagonists are kept apart emotionally for whatever reason. Then repeat.
I think I just felt manipulated in a way I didn’t enjoy. I know I’m in a minority here, but I came away with the feeling that a good editor could have tightened and condensed this book to a satisfying novella.
On the positive side, the story had scorching sexual tension, laugh out loud humour, a side-story with a criminal suspense element which was unexpected (the danger made me stiffen uncomfortably – I didn’t want the protagonists harmed!), and many truly loveable characters including siblings, families, community members which form a great foundation for the town in this book, and are likely to continue to play important roles as the series continues.
I can see the author has talent, and I might try more of her novels in future. That’s because I really enjoyed a novella by the same author called Kissing Tolstoy (Dear Professor Book 1) .
After reading so many positive reviews, it took me by surprise that I just wasn't into THIS book.
