An OK read, but formulaic S/he loves me, s/he loves me not. Various grammar problems. Mix of modern terms and Old English, including the third person narrative which I find a bit odd.
Great story! A man scorned. A woman deformed. An undeniable and force that bargain young, and found it's fullness in time. Through all that was thrown their way, even unto death love prevails. Great read. Had a hard time putting it down!
This is a great book. There is so much raw emotion in this book. The story is well written gives you a real feel for the time period. If you are looking for steamy sex then this is not the book for you. I have found that some authors have more sex than story. This one is a very good story.
A darker medieval novel, this is not a lighter fluffier read, the men are warriors- edged with violence, and believe that they dominate. Like life for women in medieval times. I do wish H and h were together more, enjoyed the deception. Overall an enjoyable novel.
This novel started out on a high note, but I quickly lost interest. It had an unusual plot and well developed principal characters, but I found it concentrated too much on the political problems of the era and not enough on the romance between the two principal characters. The story is set in the Middle Ages during the reign of King John of England. A lot of time and effort is spent describing the social unrest in Wales, the political battles between the King and his Barons, the struggles between England and France, and the cruel and vicious actions of King John. In contrast, very little time is spent on the interactions between the main characters (they spend most of the novel apart doing their own things), and there is a very obvious lack of humor in the book (I think I cracked a smile once).
As a history refresher the book has some merit, but if you want to read a good romance novel, I would suggest skipping this one and picking up Ms Carroll's other novel "The Bride Finder". That one is a real gem.
When I started this book I could not put it down. I got so involved and invested in the story-line as well as the characters that I wanted to keep on reading. The author did an excellent job with the plot and the development of the character by showing each of their insecurities and strengths. However, the ending felt rushed and a bit incomplete and I understand it was more of the author trying to close out the story. So overall the book was great (until the end). Worth the time to read it!
I really enjoyed this book because of the history and how the romance between Melyssan and Jaufre developed. I liked the characters of both Melyssan and Jaufre, Mellysan is beautiful but because of her deformed foot she is considered of little value. She had her own inner strength and was willing to love Jaufre despite his coldness. I liked how despite her foot she didn't wallow in self-pity. I really liked Jaufre, he was such a brooding and humorless character and he always said things and made remarks that were guaranteed to make the other person irritated with him. I lost myself in the story and finished it as fast as I could. This story was well-written and very engrossing.
