Fun book with some good action. It's told in a lean, fast-moving style, and has some good characters. Regarding the two protagonists, you might say this is the most violent romantic suspense story around. I'll definitely check out more in the series. I would have rated the book higher, but I have two beefs with the plot.* SPOILERS *
In the middle of the story, Reston falls under the protection of the Xibalba separatist group. They're planning to make an attempt on the Great Speaker's life. The Aztec gods, however, have their own plans to attack the Great Speaker, and they don't want Xibalba mucking things up. So the Aztec gods take out Xibalba in a spectacular fashion. My problem is that later it becomes apparent Xibalba's assassination plan would have failed. There's no way they could have manhandled the Great Speaker, who also turns out to be a god, into their aerodisc and assassinated him. The other gods must have been aware of this. So how would Xibalba's plan have messed up their own plans? The gods obviously had no regard for the lives of the Xibalba members, so they could have just sat back while the Great Speaker picked them apart. Afterward, the gods could have still proceeded with their own plan. I simply don't understand the logic of the gods' extermination of Xibalba.
My second beef concerns the ending. So, the Great Speaker dies, and this triggers his worldwide self-destruct mechanism of blowing up all of Earth's volcanoes. Mal and Reston are left to wait around to die. The End. . . . Really? You couldn't do better than that? I mean, I liked how these two characters changed as people, which is certainly the point of any good story. But it was not a happy ending, and in fact the ending felt like the writer just threw up his hands, shrugged, and walked away.
Anyway, those were my only two problems. I think they would been easy for him to fix, but alas, it's too late now.

Age of Aztec James Lovegrove 9781907992810 Books Reviews
I buy his books as soon as they're released. Didn't disappoint but found I didn't like the protagonists as much as some of the previous ones and the violence described was pretty full on.
I picked up "Age of Zeus" some time ago and thoroughly enjoyed it but never got around to reading any other books in the series until recently. Now I am practically devouring them. What's most impressive is that it is not the same Gods vs. Humanity story over and over again. Lovegrove's imagination makes each book a great read on its own.
About what you come to expect from James Lovegrove. The ending is what makes this book so good. Better than some of the other books in the series.
This is the 4th installment of the "Age of _____" series. I have read the other 3 stories and just continue to love the original storylines that he comes up with for each pantheon of gods. This one is just as gory and full of action as the others and does not disappoint. His take on the Aztec gods is brutal and well done. Love it and cant wait for another installment of Pantheon series!
Another in the Pantheon series of books. I had stopped reading these after Age of Ra because they seemed to be nothing more than recreation of the original Age of Zeus book. Age of Odin was interesting and I enjoyed it. Age of RA began the military world view and that continued in age of aztec. I read this one because I was having difficulty finding something interesting to read.
It is just hard to put down the rehashing of old legends into a modern clash of science both old and new. Although not happy with the ending, I was not surprised or angered by it. Hope is a fickle human trait, not necessarily esteemed in this genre of writing, so not upset that it was dashed.
I was hoping that there would be additions to this series, and I got it. I even got one based on the mythology I wanted!
This one was just as well written as the previous three, with one difference... the pantheon of Aztec gods didn't make an appearance until the last quarter of the novel. Honestly, I did not like that one bit. However, it didn't take away from the story. If anything, it forced the author to create even stronger mortal characters. The Conquistador was a Kick Ass hero, even if he reminded me a little too much like Bat Man (with the whole unlimited funds thing).
Looking forward to the next!
